Datasets / SEC EDGAR — Company Tickers

Public domain10k rowsReport an issue

Meridian maintains this dataset from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s public files, and holds the sec namespace until the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission claims it.

The SEC publishes company_tickers_exchange.json, in which each row pairs an EDGAR company name and CIK with one ticker and its exchange.[1][2] The SEC updates its ticker and exchange files to support EDGAR searches, and does not guarantee their accuracy or scope.[1] Meridian flattens the SEC file into four columns: cik, company_name, ticker and exchange.[3]

Background

What a CIK is

The SEC uses the Central Index Key, or CIK, on its computer systems to identify the corporations and individual people who have filed disclosure with it.[4] EDGAR assigns a CIK to identify each filer account, and the number is unique and publicly available.[5] A CIK is a permanent identifier: it may not be changed and it never expires.[5]

The SEC assigns a CIK in response to an application on Form ID, and the CIK uniquely identifies each filer, filing agent and training agent.[6] The first 10 digits of an EDGAR accession number are the CIK of the entity that submitted the filing, which may be the company or a third-party filer agent.[7] Some filer agents with no regulatory requirement to make disclosure filings have a CIK but no searchable presence in the public EDGAR database.[7]

EDGAR's submissions API addresses each entity by its 10-digit CIK, including leading zeros.[8]

Who uses it

Access to EDGAR's public database is free, and a reader can use it to research a public company's financial information and operations from the filings the company makes with the SEC.[9] EDGAR's submissions API returns, for each entity, metadata such as its current name, former names, and the stock exchanges and ticker symbols of publicly traded companies.[8] The SEC's company_tickers.json holds ticker, CIK and company name associations that provide the typeahead lookup and search for the EDGAR search on the SEC home page.[7] The company names in the SEC's ticker files are EDGAR conformed names.[7][1]

Meridian links EDGAR to GLEIF in a separate crosswalk, edgar_gleif, rather than in this dataset.[3] Treat the file as a convenient lookup from ticker to filer, and check anything that matters against the company's own filings. (Meridian's view)

What we found building it

The SEC's company_tickers_exchange.json lists 1RT Acquisition Corp., CIK 2054272, under the ticker ONCH on Nasdaq.[2] The SEC's company_tickers_exchange.json lists 1RT Acquisition Corp., CIK 2054272, in two adjacent rows under ONCHU and ONCHW, both on Nasdaq.[2]

The SEC's company_tickers_exchange.json carries a CIK as a bare number with no leading zeros, such as 320193 for Apple Inc.[2] Meridian casts the CIK to an integer, and the cast refuses anything non-numeric rather than letting it through.[3]

Where it comes from

EDGAR, the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system, is the primary system for companies and others submitting documents under the Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the Trust Indenture Act of 1939 and the Investment Company Act of 1940.[9]

The SEC began developing an electronic disclosure system in 1983, and by the fall of 1984 a pilot system was open to volunteer filers.[6] On February 23, 1993, the SEC adopted interim rules requiring filers to file most documents processed by its Divisions of Corporation Finance and Investment Management electronically, with a phase-in that began on April 26, 1993.[6] Rule 14 of Regulation S-T, adopted on October 24, 1997 and effective January 1, 1998, provides that the SEC will not accept in paper format filings required to be submitted electronically, absent a hardship exemption.[6]

As of September 15, 2025, all filers must comply with the EDGAR Next rule and form amendments to file on EDGAR, and the CIK remains a filer's unique identifier.[5]
