## Background

### Origin

ISO 3166-1 is a standard defining codes for the names of countries, dependent territories and special areas of geographical interest.[[1]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1) The country codes have been published as ISO 3166-1 since 1997, when ISO 3166 was expanded into three parts.[[1]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1) Each ISO 3166-1 entry carries an English or French short name in upper case, a short name in title case and a full name, alongside its codes.[[1]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1)

Some country names used by the UN, and accordingly by ISO, are disputed.[[1]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1)

### Use

In the Unicode CLDR locale data, the region code DE is named Germany in English and Deutschland in German.[[2]](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/unicode-org/cldr-json/main/cldr-json/cldr-localenames-full/main/en/territories.json)[[3]](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/unicode-org/cldr-json/main/cldr-json/cldr-localenames-full/main/de/territories.json) The CLDR English data names the region US as United States, with US as a short alternative.[[2]](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/unicode-org/cldr-json/main/cldr-json/cldr-localenames-full/main/en/territories.json) The CLDR English data names CZ as Czechia, with Czech Republic as a variant.[[2]](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/unicode-org/cldr-json/main/cldr-json/cldr-localenames-full/main/en/territories.json) The CLDR English data names TR as Türkiye, with Turkey as a variant.[[2]](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/unicode-org/cldr-json/main/cldr-json/cldr-localenames-full/main/en/territories.json) The CLDR English data names CI as Côte d’Ivoire, with Ivory Coast as a variant.[[2]](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/unicode-org/cldr-json/main/cldr-json/cldr-localenames-full/main/en/territories.json)
