## Background

### Origin

SEDOL stands for Stock Exchange Daily Official List.[[1]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-faqs-170321.pdf) SEDOL codes are assigned to individual securities by the London Stock Exchange.[[1]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-faqs-170321.pdf) LSEG's SEDOL page says the SEDOL Masterfile has been in operation for over 30 years.[[2]](https://www.lseg.com/en/data-indices-analytics/data/sedol)

LSEG's FAQ describes SEDOL codes as seven-character identification codes, consisting of six alphanumeric characters and a trailing check digit.[[1]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-faqs-170321.pdf) LSEG's FAQ says SEDOL codes do not contain embedded intelligence.[[1]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-faqs-170321.pdf) LSEG's FAQ gives the London Stock Exchange Group's own SEDOL code as B0SWJX3.[[1]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-faqs-170321.pdf) LSEG's technical guide says the alpha characters used in SEDOL codes are B to Z excluding vowels.[[3]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-service-and-technical-guide-v8.8.pdf) LSEG's technical guide says no SEDOL code will be issued without an alpha first character.[[3]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-service-and-technical-guide-v8.8.pdf) LSEG's technical guide says active 7 character numeric SEDOL codes, created prior to March 2004, also remain in circulation.[[3]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-service-and-technical-guide-v8.8.pdf) According to Wikipedia, the alphanumeric SEDOLs are issued sequentially, beginning with B000009.[[4]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEDOL) LSEG's technical guide says no codes will be issued with 0, 3, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 as the lead character, which allows historic series to be maintained as well as dummy codes by customers.[[3]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-service-and-technical-guide-v8.8.pdf)

The seventh character of a SEDOL code is a check digit.[[3]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-service-and-technical-guide-v8.8.pdf) LSEG's technical guide weights the seven characters 1, 3, 1, 7, 3, 9 and 1.[[3]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-service-and-technical-guide-v8.8.pdf) LSEG's technical guide says that if the sum of the weighted results is a multiple of ten, the number is taken to be correct.[[3]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-service-and-technical-guide-v8.8.pdf) LSEG's technical guide derives a check digit by taking the weighted sum of the first six characters away from the next highest number divisible by 10.[[3]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-service-and-technical-guide-v8.8.pdf) LSEG's technical guide works the example B-123-45?, whose weighted sum of 94 gives a check digit of 6.[[3]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-service-and-technical-guide-v8.8.pdf)

### Use

LSEG's FAQ says SEDOL is used by asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, fund administrators, pension funds, broker/dealers, and regulators.[[1]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-faqs-170321.pdf) LSEG's FAQ lists portfolio valuation, trade execution, processing price feeds and price validation among the uses of SEDOL.[[1]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-faqs-170321.pdf)

LSEG's FAQ says SEDOLs are embedded within UK ISIN codes.[[1]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-faqs-170321.pdf)

LSEG's technical guide writes a SEDOL as B-1H5-4P6 in one of its examples, with hyphens between groups of characters.[[3]](https://www.lseg.com/content/dam/lseg/en_us/documents/sedol/sedol-masterfile-service-and-technical-guide-v8.8.pdf) Strip hyphens and spaces before validating, keep the column as text so that codes made only of digits are never treated as numbers, and run the weighted check digit rather than trusting a seven-character pattern alone. (Meridian's view)

### Where you'll meet it

The UK Debt Management Office's press notice for the 4½% Treasury Gilt 2035 gives the new gilt the ISIN code GB00BT7J0027 and the SEDOL code B-T7J-002.[[5]](https://dmo.gov.uk/media/0jeppipl/pr040225.pdf)
